Short Story Competition for DC-area Teens: Gaithersburg Book Festival
Short story contest for DC-area teens
The Gaithersburg Book Festival wants high school students to express their creativity in the seventh annual short story contest. The 2017 contest marks the first time that students have the freedom to write about whatever they want, with no opening lines or artwork to serve as inspiration.
“We’ve read some pretty amazing writing by some very talented young people during the past six years,” said Jud Ashman, festival chair and Mayor of the City of Gaithersburg. “This year we are changing up the contest and look forward to seeing what students can produce when there are no limits, no constraints.”
To participate in the short story contest, students must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at a public or private school, or be in a homeschool program, for the 2016-17 school year, and must reside in Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia.
Stories cannot exceed 1,000 words and must be submitted as a Word document to:
writingcontestATgaithersburgbookfestivalDOTorg (Change AT to @ and DOT to . )
by midnight ET on Friday, February 17, 2017.
Up to 12 stories will be selected as finalists and posted on the Gaithersburg Book Festival website prior to the Book Festival. The first-, second- and third-place winners and the fan favorite will be announced at the Festival on Saturday, May 20, 2017, and will be awarded $100, $75, $50 and $25 gift certificates, respectively, courtesy of the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus.

Call for Submissions: Sun Star Review
Sun Star Review is currently open for submissions to our Winter 2017 issue. We are seeking prose (whether fiction, nonfiction, flash, long, or simply unclassifiable), poetry, visual art, and mixed media work.
Aesthetically, we prefer nuance to flash. We look for depth and emotional resonance. And we appreciate risk taking and ambitiousness¾so long as the ambition is earnest. We love to read experimental work: work that plays with craft and genre, work that blends the real and the fantastical, work that challenges our sense of perspective. Our journal is also committed to promoting diverse voices, and we love to see points of view that aren’t well represented in the general literary scene.
We’ll be accepting no fee submissions for this issue through November 15 at our website.
Thanks for your interest, and we look forward to reading your work!

Call for Submissions on Theme of "State of the Union": Iron Horse Literary Review
Iron Horse Literary Review is kicking off this production year by opening our submission gates to our State of the Union Issue. We're looking for poems, stories, and essays that focus upon the potential of unity and union, the splendor of diversity, the belief in progress.
We're also considering those darker manuscripts that contemplate moments when we have failed. So our State of the Union issue will mourn when we have foundered but will look forward to tomorrow . . . because we aren't interested in going backward to "again." History repeating itself is rarely a good idea. So send us your work--literary, artistic, grounded in reality (or the surreal!), and not sermons on the obvious but rather manuscripts that deliver maverick scenes and stories and people so distinctive no one can deny them.
Submit now through Sept 23 online here.

Deadline September 25th. All details here.
Into The Void Magazine seeks fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art for Issue Two. There is no theme. We want work that screams out from inside you and grabs hold of us. We want to hear what you have no choice but to tell. Unpublished and less established writers have as good a chance as any—it’s all about the writing.
There is a €1.40 submission fee but if you buy Issue One in any format, it’s free to submit.
Deadline September 25th. All details here.
