Call for Submissions: Rockvale Review

Submissions OPEN for Issue TEN on January 1, 2023!

The reading period runs from January 1 to March 31, 2023.

Issue Ten will be published in May 2023.

We publish poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction. Please read the following guidelines carefully and in their entirety. Disregarding our guidelines may result in the disqualification of your submission.

The reading period for Issue Ten is January 1 to March 31, 2023. Work submitted outside this window will not be read. We invite you to submit your best work that is both bold and vulnerable. This issue is unthemed.

Guidelines applicable to all genres:

  • We read blind, so don’t put your name anywhere on your work or in the title of the file you attach. If we see a name, the submission will be disqualified and we won’t read it. You can add a cover letter and a 100-word, 3rd-person bio in the appropriate section on the form if you wish, but we are more interested in the quality of the work you send now than in your past achievements. If your work is accepted, we will contact you for your author’s bio.
  • Please use 12-point, Times New Roman font. We only accept .doc, .docx or PDF files.
  • We may ask for an edit in a piece of writing we really believe in.
  • While we’d love to compensate you for your beautiful words, we can’t do that yet.
  • We only accept work via Submittable.
  • Simultaneous submissions are perfectly OK, but please let us know if your work is accepted somewhere else by making a note in Submittable. Previously published work is not accepted.
  • We acquire first North American serial rights for work we publish. All rights revert to the author upon publication. Should your work be subsequently published in a chapbook, full collection, another journal, or anthology, please mention that it appeared first in Rockvale Review.
  • Submission Fee: We charge a $2.50 submission fee for all submissions.

Specific guidelines for each writing genre.

Poetry:

  • Send 1-3 poems. Start each poem on a new page. Please don’t send poems longer than 50 lines. Poems may be single-spaced.
  • Please don’t send song lyrics or greeting card verse, poems with explicit language, or poems that are overtly political, sexual, or discriminatory.
  • It is unlikely that we will publish rhyming verse. It is unlikely that we will publish translations.
  • While we will consider all types and forms of poetry, we lean toward image-driven work that is clearly grounded in craft. We pay attention to line breaks, enjambment, use of punctuation, musicality, rhythm of language, etc.

Short Fiction:

  • Send 1 piece of writing, double-spaced, with a word limit of 2500.
  • In the header of each page, please include the story title. Please include page numbers.
  • Story must be a complete work on its own and not an excerpt of a greater work. There must be a clear narrative arc that peaks with crisis/action. We are looking for stories that move us.
  • Please carefully check your work for misspellings, punctuation, language issues, etc.

Creative Nonfiction:

  • Send 1 piece of writing, double-spaced, no longer than 2500 words.
  • In the header of each page, please include the CNF title. Please include page numbers.
  • We consider CNF to include memoir, essay, and reported material written in a narrative style using storytelling techniques.
  • Please carefully check your work for misspellings, punctuation, language issues, etc.

Thank you for sending us your work. We appreciate the chance to read it. We generally respond within 12 weeks.

Surprise us, amaze us, make us gasp. We want to feel the power of your words.

Call for Submissions to Anthology: The Dog Who Wooed at the World

We are currently accepting submissions around the theme of courageous animals for our first anthology, debuting in December 2023, The Dog Who Wooed at the World. Stories should explain how an animal’s bravery inspired and moved you.

STORY GUIDELINES:

  • Stories must be true (non-fiction). They must relate to non-human animals (of any species) and can be about your personal experiences/growth because of an animal, an issue threatening animals today, or other aspects of the human/non-human animal relationship. For the upcoming anthology, please weave the theme of courage/bravery into your story. We are particularly interested in spotlighting species less familiar to people, like insects, marine animals, and reptiles. Even if the act of bravery doesn’t seem earth-shattering, we’d love to include you: everyday acts of courage, like a mother cichlid fish forgoing food to protect her clutch of eggs in her mouth or a parrot who learns to love again after losing a lifelong bond with a guardian who passed away, showcase the remarkable spirits of animals in their own right.
  • One winning author will receive a $300 prize, and the second place author will receive $200. All other authors with stories chosen for the book will receive a $50 award, along with a free copy of the book upon its publication in 2023 a week before its release to the general public. Stories not chosen for the book will have the opportunity to be featured online on the blog, with a $20 award. These awards are being made possible by the late activist and my second mom, Sherrie Carter, who left her estate to advance work for animals, and will be issued after submissions close.
  • Authors do not have to be vegan/vegetarian, but stories may not promote/encourage the use of animals for food, fashion, entertainment, breeding, etc. Please take a few minutes to read about our history and mission before submitting to ensure we are a good match for your writing.
  • Authors should include a short bio (up to 100 words) highlighting their relevant life/work details, including up to one link they’d like to promote.
  • Please provide links or citations to any sources you use for data or other factual information.
  • No plagiarism. All words must be original writing.
  • Please keep your submission roughly between 500 and 3,000 words.
  • Stories must not have been previously published (but you may repost them after we have published).
  • If possible, please also provide one or more high-resolution photos to accompany your story (either owned by you or with permission to use. Please provide photographer credit).
  • Include your name, location, phone number, and email address in the document you submit.

Call for submissions opened on September 22, 2022, and is projected to close on March 31, 2023. The tentative publication of the book is December 2023.

Please note that we are particularly interested in showcasing stories and experiences written by Black, indigenous, and other people of color, as well as folks from the LGBTQ+ community.

Thank you!

Writing Competition and Residency: Another Chicago Magazine

In 2023, Another Chicago Magazine will award a free multi-week residency in Belfast, Maine, which is on the coast, about two hours north of Portland and one hour southeast of Bangor. S.L. Wisenberg, ACM editor and author of the forthcoming Juniper prizewinner, The Wandering Womb, is the final judge.

The recipient will be a nonfiction writer whose work brings uncommon insight, incisive language, and strong storytelling to the subject at hand, which could be anything that blends the political and personal, or summons justice, or dives deep into individual experience, but always with larger contexts in mind. As for tone, ACM continues to encourage play and rage and courage. ACM will consider all submissions for publication.

The Shannaghe Residency in Belfast is a solo experience in a fully renovated stable, with a full kitchen and open living room, large lofted bedroom, laundry facilities, newly installed AC/heater, internet access. The stable sits on land that extends to the Penobscot River, and is within walking distance of three bookstores, two farmer’s markets, and the bay, via a rail trail. The resident can choose a two- or three-week stay, and is responsible for travel to Bangor. The kitchen is stocked with cooking basics. Shannaghe will provide a few meals.

Apply between January 15 and March 17; the portal closes at 120 applicants.

Writing Competition: The Chautauqua Janus Prize

We are now accepting submissions for the 2023 prize. Deadline for submissions is February 28, 2023.

The Chautauqua Janus Prize will be awarded for the sixth time this summer, celebrating an emerging writer’s single work of short fiction or nonfiction for daring formal and aesthetic innovations that upset and reorder readers’ imaginations. In addition to receiving a $5,000 award and a travel stipend, the winner gives a lecture on the grounds during the summer season and appears in a forthcoming issue of the literary journal Chautauqua.

Janus Prize nominees selected by their programs or magazines should contact Michael I. Rudell Director of Literary Arts Sony Ton-Aime at:

stonaime@chq.org for submission instructions.

Eligible entries: May be up to 15,000 words in length but no more than 100 pages.

The Chautauqua Janus Prize encourages writing that challenges conventional presentation and publication of fiction/nonfiction in the English language.

Must be either unpublished or published no earlier than April of 2022.

Must be authored by emerging writers of fiction/nonfiction. Emerging writers are defined as writers who have yet to publish their first book (exceeding 15,000 words and/or 100 pages) in any prose genre. (Poets: This prize was created to support emerging writers. Reconsider your eligibility if you have published one or more poetry collections, even if our word count parameters technically qualify you.) There is no age or citizenship status restriction for eligibility.

May be nominated by the authors themselves or on an author’s behalf by editors or creative writing program directors. Self-nominating authors may submit no more than two entries per submission period. Editors and program directors must have the consent of authors to nominate their work and may nominate no more than three entries per submission period. Nomination by an editor program or press/magazine does not preclude an author from submitting additional self-nominated entries.

SUBMISSIONS Complete the Submittable form, including fee payment*, by the advertised deadline EST. Please use PDF format. Contact Emily Carpenter at:

ecarpenter@chq.org

if PDF format is not ideal for your submission.

Meet formatting specifications where possible. If your submission’s prior publication or experimental form simply aren’t conducive to Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and double-spacing, know that we will give full consideration to all legible PDF submissions.

The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2023.

Entry Fee: $20.00

*The fee is waived for submissions nominated by editors or program directors. We invite authors to encourage their editors and/or program directors to reach out to Emily Carpenter at ecarpenter@chq.org to learn more!

Call for Submissions: Club Plum

Deadline: March 31, 2023

Club Plum happily publishes the following:

Lyric Essays / Creative Nonfiction: Send one nonfiction work only of up to 3,000 words to:

editor@clubplumliteraryjournal.com

Include a short bio, and do not send previously published work. Send in docx or doc format, or in the body of the email. Send flash, segmented, braided, hermit crab, hybrid and beautiful essays. Send micro-nonfiction. Send hard-to-classify short pieces.

Flash Fiction: Please send one piece of flash fiction of no more than 800 words to:

editor@clubplumliteraryjournal.com

Include a short bio, and do not send previously published work. Do send lyrical prose, wondrous prose, fierce prose. Do send words that successfully skate on the edge of realities. Arresting prose lodged in one reality is also well received.

Prose Poetry: Do not send poetry broken into lines; you will not get a response. We love lined poetry and may accept lined poetry in the future, but we do not currently publish it, no matter how wonderful. We are not fond of straightforward paragraphs masquerading as prose poetry. We like music and surprise and momentum in our prose poetry. We like strangeness, too. We like poems that unravel, ending with a lump in the editor’s throat. Please send up to three prose poems to:

editor@clubplumliteraryjournal.com

Include a short bio, and do not send previously published work.

Hybrid Works: Send genre-bending and language-bending works. We like strange things. Please send up to three pieces of hybrid works to:

 editor@clubplumliteraryjournal.com

Art: Please send one JPG image to:

editor@clubplumliteraryjournal.com

The editor appreciates acrylics, pen-and-ink line art, pencil drawings, collage, watercolor, experimental, impressionistic and abstract pieces, both black-and-white and color. The editor will pass on photography. Please send a brief description of the medium of the piece. Artists are encouraged to send a website link where more works are showcased.

Rights: We ask for first North American Serial Rights.

Responses to writers will be quick because the editor is busy and utilizes every minute of her day. Note: Respect will be given when respect is received; submissions shot to the editor without an accompanying few words will not be read. Multiple submissions will not be read.

Only send your best work. Proofread. Work with sloppy errors makes the editor think you don’t care or don’t know any better.

Send your work in docx, doc or in the body of the email.

Issues are available online only, four times a year.

We accept simultaneous submissions.
