Writing Competition: Augsburg's Howling Bird Press Poetry Book Prize

Augsburg’s Howling Bird Press Poetry Book Prize

Poets—we want to read your work! Send your manuscript to Howling Bird Press to be considered for our annual prize. The winner receives $1,000, book publication in fall 2018, distribution by Small Press Distribution, and an invitation to read in Minneapolis (all expenses paid) at Augsburg’s MFA summer residency. All books are handsomely designed and printed on offset presses (no print-on-demand). This nationwide contest is open to all writers in English regardless of publication history—both emerging and established authors are encouraged to apply.

Howling Bird Press is the publishing imprint of Augsburg’s MFA in Creative Writing, proudly situated in the rich literary community of the Twin Cities. Our growing list of publications includes books by Marci Vogel, Jacob M. Appel, and Jean Harper. MFA faculty and graduate students enrolled in our publishing sequence read manuscripts and choose the winner. In making our decision, we give careful, thorough attention and consideration to every entry in full. The prize category alternates yearly—from poetry, fiction, and nonfiction—so don’t miss this chance, as it won’t come around again for another three years! The deadline is June 30. The winner is notified in January. Manuscripts should be 60 to 80 pages long.

The entry fee is $25.

Online submissions only. To submit, go here.
