Do you have a creative cowboy poem about a wild journey, or perhaps an adventure out in the prairie? The American Cowboy Journal is seeking cowboy and cowgirl poetry for our 1st Annual Poetry Contest. Now accepting ballads, odes and poetic devices such as mnemonics and repetition found in rhymes about a cowboy or a cowgirls wild journey. See contest rules below.

A Book Launch Party will be held March 2025 in Wickenburg Arizona (specific location, date and time will be announced soon after selected entries are finalized in September/October 2024). All winners and selected authors will be invited to a Cowboy Poetry Reading and Book Launch Party located in Wickenburg, Arizona. Each Author will have the opportunity to recite their poem around a campfire and enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship during the evening. So, let’s get to writing! We’d love to see you at the Book Launch Party!

CONTEST RULES: NO ENTRY FEE 

  • Poetry contest runs from June 1st 2024 through August 31st 2024.
  •  Plagiarized content will result in disqualification without notification. All published sources must be cited with, at minimum, Author, Title, and Date of Publication.
  • Poems are to be a maximum of 1000 words, up to 3 entries will be accepted per author. Poems must be submitted using times new roman, 12pt, 1.5 line spacing in pdf form. Submit up to 3 poems via email to:

  • Mail entries must be delivered by the deadline of August 31 2024; in order to be accepted in to contest and go through selection process. Entries will not be returned.
  • Must be a new or old poem that has NOT been previously published. Any poems that have been submitted to the American Cowboy Journal that have been submitted to other contests are NOT eligible for this contest and future contests.
  • Entrants must be at least 18 years of age and older. Open to residents of the U.S.A. and Canada.
  • Poems must be written in American English, no violence beyond explaining certain situations at a minimum, no vulgarity, no explicit stories, these types of poems will be rejected and disqualified. Any entry that contains explicit pornography, sexism, racism, or homophobia, or that denigrates or marginalizes any race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation will be automatically disqualified, and the author will be banned from submitting further works to any and all contests performed and managed by the American Cowboy Journal and its affiliates.
  • Selected stories will be published by The Literary Press on behalf of the American Cowboy Journal in March 2025. Limited to 30 to 100 poems will be selected for publication, depending on length and amount of submissions for consideration of book capacity.
  • All works will remain the property of the American Cowboy Journal, all poems selected will be published and used on social media platforms including web pages. Author will get full 100% credit in the collective poetry publication.
  • There will be 3 winners receiving cash prizes; see winner info posted below. Entrants who have been selected for publication will receive a copy of the published book, and recognition and credit for their short story if chosen for the published series. Author Bios, and Photos will be included and published along with your short story if selected.
  • Winners will be notified via email by January 2025. Any selected short stories will also be notified via email. There will be 3 Winners selected through due process. Entries will be judged on the theme, content and ability to capture the cowboy spirit in your poem.

First Place: $100, plus 5 books

Second Place: $75, plus 4 books

Third Place: $50, plus 3 books
