FABULA ARGENTEA SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
(revised 03/30/2025)
Writers of quality fiction up to 8,000 words are invited to submit to our magazine. We publish four times a year at the start of these months: January, April, October, September. We are open to most subject matter except fan fiction and erotica. Explicit language is fine when the story requires its usage.
We do NOT accept poetry.
Please submit pieces as an email attachment to:
FAsubmits@gmail.com
We value our submitters and try to respond with our decision in 2-3 weeks (occasionally a bit longer). We acknowledge receipt of a submission in 1-3 days. If you have not received an acknowledgment within 5 days, please contact us.
A cover letter is appreciated but not necessary. We only accept these formats: (.doc .docx .rtf .txt).
Please do NOT send us PDF files. We cannot edit or format those for the magazine.
====================
WHAT WE WANT are stories that give us something unexpected or unusual. or have a strong emotional resonance. We love stories with an ending we did not see coming, serious or humorous (as long as the ending is set up and doesn’t come out of nowhere. Be creative. Amaze us with your writing, your use of language, memorable characters, a strong or quirky voice. But the story first needs to be clear and strong and not buried in clever writing.
Give us a story that we and our readers will not be able to forget, one with an intriguing opening or premise, then follow it through to a strong ending. We generally decline pieces that have weak or unresolved endings.
We do accept previously published stories. However, they must not be currently available on personal websites, and we prefer that they not be currently available for free in electronic form elsewhere.
WHAT WE DO NOT WANT (unless the stories are unusual or very compelling):
(1) NO troubled or abusive relationships, cheating partners, romantic encounters regardless of how they work out (i.e. no boy meets girl, boy gets/loses girl, etc.)
(2) NO extreme or gratuitous violence or terrorism
(3) NO stories where drugs or killing play a prominent role with no redeeming factors
(4) NO pieces that are not stories, meaning they lack conflict and a resolution or resonance
(5) NO stories about some current event or individual(s) in the news. References to current events and individuals are okay as long as their purpose is to set the story in time and the story isn’t focused on those things. If the story would not have an impact or significant meaning ten or twenty years from now, we’re probably not interested.
(6) Do not submit anything written by an AI program (although AI assistance with grammar is acceptable).
(7) Please do not send us pieces similar to ones we’ve recently published. Unless they take us in a new direction, we’re probably going to decline them, at least for the near future.
====================
Each published piece will include a comment on “Why we chose to publish” stating why the editors selected it and considered it exceptional.
Our editorial policies respect the artistic license of our authors. Once a piece is accepted for publication, we will make no changes beyond basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation corrections. The author is always given final approval prior to publication.
FORMAT: Use a standard font such as Arial, Times Roman, or Courier New in 12 pt size. Line spacing is unimportant. Please refrain from using fancy headers or footers, text effects, background colors or images because these will not be reproduced in the final published piece.
We accept submissions throughout the year and publish four times a year at the beginning of January, April, July, and October. We cut off submissions for a given issue approximately one month prior to each publication date. Submissions after a cut-off date will automatically be considered for the next issue.
