Call for Submissions: Mom Egg Review

Mom Egg Review seeks submissions of work in all genres for its 13th issue, plus a special themed poetry folio, “Compassionate Action”.

Mom Egg Review, a print literary journal featuring poetry, creative prose, short fiction, and visual art, seeks your fine work for its thirteenth annual issue. The issue is un-themed, but will also contain a special poetry folio to be curated by Jennifer Jean, “Compassionate Action”. We publish work by mother writers or by anyone about mothers or motherhood. 

 

There is no fee to submit. Submissions will be open until September 1, 2014. Please read our full guidelines before submitting.

Poetry and Fiction Competitions: Ernest Sandeen and Richard Sullivan Prizes

The ERNEST SANDEEN and RICHARD SULLIVAN prizes in fiction and poetry are sponsored by the Creative Writing Program in the Department of English at University of Notre Dame in conjunction with The University of Notre Dame Press.

GUIDELINES

The Sandeen Prize in Poetry and the Sullivan Prize in Short Fiction are awarded to authors who have published at least one volume of short fiction or one volume of poetry. Please include a photocopy of the copyright and the title page of your previous volume. Vanity press publications do not fulfill this requirement.

Though the Sandeen/Sullivan Prizes are open to any author, with the exception of graduates of the University of Notre Dame, who has published at least one book of short stories or one collection of poetry, we will pay special attention to second volumes. Please include a vita and/or a biographical statement which includes your publishing history. We will be glad to see a selection of reviews of the earlier collection.

Please submit two copies of your manuscript and inform us if the manuscript is available on computer disk. Mail manuscripts to:

Include an SASE for acknowledgment of receipt of your submission. If you would like your manuscript returned, please send an SASE. Manuscripts will not otherwise be returned. A $15 administrative fee should accompany submissions. Make checks payable to University of Notre Dame. Every contestant will receive a one-year free subscription to the Notre Dame Review.

The volumes of the Sandeen/Sullivan Prizes will be published in trade paperback format with a limited signed hardback edition (primarily for libraries). The author will be offered a standard contract with the University of Notre Dame Press. There will be a $1,000 prize, a $500 award and a $500 advance against royalties from the Notre Dame Press.

The next Richard Sullivan prize submission period will be May 1 - Sept. 1, 2014; the next Ernest Sandeen prize period is May 1 - Sept. 1, 2015.

Selection of the winners is expected during the spring following the submission period. Both the Sandeen and the Sullivan Prizes are awarded biannually, but judged quadrennially.

We intend to invite the winners to Notre Dame at the time of publication for a prize presentation and reading.

Muzzle Magazine publishes poetry, visual art, interviews, book reviews, and performance reviews. We are currently open to submissions in all categories. Please use our online submissions form.

Poetry Submissions: Please send 3-5 poems at a time. Include all poems in one DOC or PDF file.

Additionally, please make sure your name does not appear anywhere in the document or submission title; our editors like to view submissions blindly.

Upon acceptance of poetry submissions, poets will be invited to send audio recordings of their work.

Visual Art Submissions: All art submissions must be attached as JPEG files. Please send no more than 5 pieces in one submission. In the file name for each piece, please include the title of the piece (ex: Alight.jpeg).

Interviews: Interviews should be less than 2000 words. Each interview must be attached as a PDF or DOC file.

Reviews: Reviews should be less than 1500 words. Book Reviews should be of poetry books published within the past 2 years. Performance Reviews should be of poetry performances that occurred within the past 6 months. Each review must be attached as a PDF or DOC file.

Call for Speculative Poetry Submissions: Eye to the Telescope

Eye to the Telescope call for poetry submissions

Eye to the Telescope (ETTT) is a guest-edited online publication of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. ETTT 14 will be edited by John C. Mannone, who is looking for ekphrastic submissions for the October 2014 issue. Deadline September 15, 2014.

There is no particular theme for this issue, but the speculative poems (sci-fi, fantasy, surrealism, etc.) must be exactly 100 words (excluding titles and epigraphs/postscripts that cite other sources) and be connected to the visual art linked below (see website). They may contain tones of humor or horror, but most importantly, I am looking for literary quality writing with literary depth. All forms/styles are accepted. Either write a poem directly inspired by one of the images posted on our site or pair up a poem influenced by a current science event (include an online reference) that also complements one of the pictures. Identify which image elicited each poem.

For our summer issue, we're interested in poetry (under 35 lines) and fiction and nonfiction (under 5,000 words). Topic and theme are open, our only requirement is to send your best work - and to read a past publication or two to get an idea of what we like.
