Submissions for Volume 2 of The Red House Anthology are now open!

What is The Red House?

The Red House is a cabinet of curiosities; a terrarium for the macabre and bizarre; the enchanted and fantastical; where anything can happen. Many reside within the walls of The Red House—from restless spirits to forgotten Gods and a door may lead to a far distant magical land, or to the furthest depths of outer space.

Red House celebrates fantasy, horror and science-fiction, in any form they may take. Feel free to horrify us or enchant us; make us cry or us laugh. The only limitation is your imagination.

Submission Guidelines

• Please send up to three unpublished poems, or three pages of unpublished poetry (whichever comes first) and a 75 word bio in a single Word document to:

with “Red House Submission” in the subject line.

• We accept work from writers across the globe.

• We encourage simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if you have to withdraw one or more of your submissions.

• We will try to get back to you as quickly as we can, but please wait up to two months before sending any inquires.

• All contributors will receive a complimentary copy of the anthology. We can’t wait to read your poems!

Call for Essay Collections: Sarabande Books

Open Essay Reading Month

September 1 - September 30

Sarabande Books publishes essay collections between 150-250 pages in length. We accept essay manuscripts for consideration each September. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please withdraw your submission if accepted elsewhere. It is best practice to be familiar with our previously published essays before submitting.

 

We are pleased to offer fee-free entry to Black and Indigenous writers and writers of color.

 

ELIGIBILITY

This submission period is open to essay manuscripts in English. Individual essays from the manuscript may have been published previously in magazines, chapbooks of less than 48 pages, or anthologies, but the collection as a whole must be unpublished. Translations and previously self-published collections are not eligible. Employees and board members of Sarabande Books are not eligible.

MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS

• A single essay or collection of essays between 150-250 pages 
  

• Manuscript must be paginated consecutively with a table of contents and acknowledgements page (a list of publications in which stories or sections of the manuscript have appeared).

• Multiple submissions are permitted if submitted separately, each with a separate $20 submission fee.
  

• Once submitted, manuscripts cannot be altered.

Writing Competitions: CutBank

Submissions Open: August 16 - September 30

Award: $500 first place prize and publication in CutBank 94. Two runners-up will be awarded $50 and publication in CutBank 94. All other submissions will be considered with submissions for the print edition of CutBank.

What We're Looking For: Interesting, compelling fiction and nonfiction prose in 750 words or fewer. Lyric essays, prose poems, short essays, vignettes - send us your best, most dazzling short form prose.

Submission Guidelines:

• Submissions will be accepted through the Submittable submission manager. Print or email submissions will not be considered. Please include a brief cover letter, biography and contact information in the form provided - please do not include identifying information in the body of your submission.

• Submissions must be previously unpublished.

• Simultaneous submissions are certainly welcome; however, please withdraw your CutBank submission immediately via Submittable if it is accepted elsewhere.

• Submissions should be double spaced, no more than 750 words.

• Submission fee of $7 includes consideration for CutBank's $500 flash prose prize and publication in CutBank 94. Two runners-up will be awarded $50 and publication in CutBank 94. All other submissions will be considered with submissions for the print edition of CutBank Literary Magazine.

Daryl Scroggins will be judging this year's Flash contest. He has taught creative writing and literature at The University of Texas at Dallas, The University of North Texas, and the Writer’s Garret, in Dallas. He now lives in Marfa, Texas. His fictions, poems, and creative non-fictions have appeared in magazines and anthologies around the country and abroad, including Alaska Quarterly Review, Blink-Ink, Carolina Quarterly, CutBank, Dime Show Review, Egress, Fiction Southeast, Green Mountains Review, Hayden’s Ferry Review, KYSO Flash, New Flash Fiction Review, New York Tyrant, Northwest Review, Quick Fiction, and The Portland Review. Nominated for a Pushcart Prize several times, his flash fiction and prose poems have also won a number of contests and awards. He is the author of several poetry and fiction chapbooks, as well as Winter Investments, a collection of stories (Trilobite Press), and This Is Not the Way We Came In, a collection of flash fiction and a flash novel (Ravenna Press). One of his microfictions was reprinted in Flash Fiction International (2015; in the Flash Theory section), and another microfiction has been included in Best Microfiction 2020.

Writing Competition: The Lascaux Prize in Creative Nonfiction

The Lascaux Prize in Creative Nonfiction

Creative nonfiction may include memoirs, chronicles, personal essays, humorous perspectives, literary journalism—anything the author has witnessed, experienced, learned, or discovered. Pieces may be previously published or unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are accepted.

Winner receives $1,000 and a bronze medallion. Finalists receive $100. Winner and finalists are published in both the online and annual print editions of The Lascaux Review.

Two copies of the journal will be supplied to every writer appearing in it.

Entry fee is $15. Writers may enter more than once.

Length should not exceed 10,000 words. All topics are welcome; pieces should be written in a nonacademic style. Judges are the journal’s editors. Writers retain all rights to their work at all times.

Contest participants receive free downloads of the Lascaux volumes to date. Because editors are dispersed geographically the review is unable to accept submissions via postal mail. Make sure Submittable is on your safe list.

We use light of the moon in it’s monthly travels to mark the passage of time and reflect on our gains or losses. What does moon light make you think of, be it mysterious or mundane? Applications for A Hotel Room of One’s Own: The Erma Bombeck | Anna Lefler Humorist-in-Residence Program will be accepted Sept. 7-28.

Fee: $25.

Two emerging humor writers will receive registration, travel and hotel expenses for the March 24-26 Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, where they will spend two weeks at the University of Dayton Marriott to work on their writing projects. It’s the gift of time to write and free room service.

Nancy Cartwright, voice of Bart Simpson, and Mike Reiss, veteran Simpsons writer, will choose two winners.
