Call for Submissions from Writers Ages 13-25 on Theme of "What Does it Mean to be Human?": Aorta Literary Magazine

Submissions are accepted on a periodic basis, and the magazine will release a new edition each time.

The deadline for Issue 1 is December 1.

The Aorta Literary Magazine is open to different topics as long as they at least broadly answer the question, “What does it mean to be human”. We are looking for unique works and we do NOT accept works with profanity. Hate speech and discrimination are not allowed at all. Though the magazine focuses on writing, any type of expression is welcomed. We encourage young writers and teen writers to especially submit! *If any of these guidelines are not followed, you will not get a respond back.

Note that we do not accept previously published work.

Call for Submissions for London Great Cities Vol. 1: Pure Slush

Submissions for London Great Cities Vol. 1 are NOW OPEN

We are accepting submissions of poetry and prose (fiction and non-fiction) for London. (Submissions will close 30th September 2025.)

Your submission must include London, whether as a memory, wishful thinking, an anecdote, the setting for your story or poem, a place of importance, or where you live or holiday … 

• Your submission must also be: original, so previously unpublished online or in print (so that includes authors’ websites and blogs)

• 150 word minimum limit for fiction and non-fiction, stories and essays / maximum 1000 words. (That’s for each story / essay: maximum number of prose pieces you can submit is 3.)

• 80 word minimum limit for poetry / maximum 1000 words. (That’s for each poem: maximum number of poems you can submit is 5.)

Call for Submissions: The Georgia Review

The Georgia Review welcomes submissions both online and by post from August 15 to May 15. We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts outside this period.

All manuscripts receive serious, careful attention; each submission is read by a published writer in a salaried position at The Georgia Review. We aim to respond to submissions within ten months. Committed to supporting authors at all stages in their careers, The Georgia Review pays our contributors. Subscribers can submit for free during our general submissions period (excluding contests); active subscribers should contact us to receive a link to submit for free, providing the genre of the work to be submitted and your full name and address (including zip code). General paper submissions by mail are also free (aside from the cost of postage) for everyone.

Work previously published in any form will not be considered. Please tell us in your cover letter if your submission is simultaneously being considered elsewhere, and please let us know immediately if your work is accepted by another publication. Likewise, please notify us if any part of your submission is known to be included in a book already accepted by a publisher (include the anticipated date of book publication).

We do not publish work by current University of Georgia students.

Paper Submissions

General paper submissions do not require a submission fee. All paper manuscripts must include a cover letter with your name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. If you’d like to receive our decision by mail, your submission must be accompanied by a postage-paid and self-addressed return envelope. Payment and Copyright

The Georgia Review's current standard pay rates for our print issues are $50 per printed page for prose and $4 per line for poetry, up to $800. In addition, all contributors receive two copies of the issue their work appears in and a 50% discount on additional copies of that issue.

The Georgia Review buys first North American serial rights only. All other rights revert to the author at publication, but we offer formal, written reassignments upon request. We ask that whenever an author reprints work that first appeared in our pages, The Georgia Review be given acknowledgment for the specific work(s) involved.

Fiction

The Georgia Review publishes literary fiction. Please submit only one story. Manuscripts must be double-spaced. We rarely publish anything 9,000 words or more. We expect translators to acquire translation rights before submitting.

Poetry

The Georgia Review typically publishes multiple pages of poetry by each poet we feature. For consideration, submit 6–10 pages of poetry or one long poem. Please format and submit as a single document. We expect translators to acquire translation rights before submitting.

Essays

Please submit only one essay. Manuscripts must be double-spaced. We rarely publish anything 9,000 words or more. We expect translators to acquire translation rights before submitting.

Book Reviews

We welcome unsolicited submissions for book reviews. Reviewers should cite the title, author, place of publication and publisher, year, number of pages, and price of the book or books in the review.

Poetry

In a single word document, submit unpublished poetry that encapsulates a personal experience with immigration. We welcome any style of poetry that creatively captures an experience with immigration that has had an impact on your life.

Prose

In a word document, submit any essay or personal written account about an experience with immigration. Whether this indicates a personal story about immigrating to a new country for better opportunities or a journal entry about an experience you or someone you know has had that has impacted you profoundly. Ideal length between 500 and 1000 words, but we will make room for work that is outside of these word count parameters.

Visual artwork

In a single pdf, tiff, or jpeg file, submit up to 3 separate pieces of visual artwork related to travel and/or immigration. While we accept artwork in any medium, photography or visual artwork with photographic elements is preferred to truly capture the experience of immigration and its impact on the people and society we are experiencing in real time.

The work may be inspired by your travels, depicting travel itself, or simply a reflection of movement itself. The immigrant experience or the impact of immigration must be your own.

Call for Submissions to Anthology: Time After Time

Time after Time

Time after Time is a short story anthology targeted toward lovers of mysteries set in specific historical eras. We are seeking short stories of no more than 7,500 words that have a strong crime or mystery element and that take place in a time period other than the present. Both cozy and dark stories are welcome. If you are an existing author, feel free to feature your current protagonist in your short story.

• Please include an author bio of no more than 200 words at the end of your submitted story. If you use social media platforms, you are welcome to include those in your bio if you would like readers to follow you on that platform.

• We do not accept AI generated stories or reprints of stories already published elsewhere.

• Simultaneous submissions are fine.

• Please double space your manuscript; Word document format is strongly preferred.

• There are no requirements for the plot other than that it be mystery/crime fiction set either sometime in the past or the future. If you choose to submit a story set in the future, please be aware that, again, it must be primarily mystery- or crime-related and not just science fiction. Bonus points for creating an authentic historical setting that engrosses readers.

• Authors whose stories are accepted will receive $25 in payment, three author copies of the finished book, and an ad in the back of the anthology where they can publicize their other work, including any novels or other artistic endeavors (publicized novels can be either traditionally published or self-published).

• In return for this compensation, Thalia Press will hold exclusive world rights for your short story for the period of one year following publication of the anthology. After that, while we may continue to publish the anthology, you are welcome to republish your short story elsewhere.

• Your story will be subject to editing, primarily for style and copyediting purposes. However, content changes may be requested if the editor feels they are needed. While content changes are always the prerogative of the author, if you do not feel comfortable at least considering an editor’s advice, we recommend that you apply elsewhere.

Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2025.

Call for Submissions: Lobster Salad and Champagne

 

Submissions
Lobster Salad and Champagne is an optimistic feminist publication that publishes personal essays, short stories, poetry, flash fiction, artwork, and translations. We are seeking pieces that explore experiences that are unique to women in a positive way. This theme is open to interpretation. However, Lobster Salad and Champagne is not looking for romance, erotica, graphic content, political content or news.

Simultaneous submissions welcome. Lobster Salad and Champagne uses a blind submission process, so please do not send any identifying information. Expect to hear back within a month.

Deadline is October 15th for inclusion in the Fall 2025 issue. Feel free to send a follow-up email if you do not hear back after two weeks. Read below for specific submission guidelines by category.

1. Personal Essays

• Length: 500–2,000 words.

• Theme: Reflect on an experience unique to being a woman in a positive or empowering way. Essays should be honest, thoughtful, and nuanced.

• Formatting: Double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman or similar, 1-inch margins.

• Limit: 1 essay per submission cycle.

2. Short Stories

• Length: 1,000–3,500 words.

• Style: Strong character-driven narratives that align with the issue’s theme. Avoid romance and graphic content.

• Formatting: Same as essays.

• Limit: 1 story per submission cycle.

3. Poetry

• Length: Up to 5 poems, not exceeding 10 pages total.

• Style: Any form or style, as long as it ties to the theme in a unique and uplifting way

• Formatting: Each poem on a separate page in one file.

• Limit: Up to 5 poems per submission cycle.

4. Flash Fiction

• Length: 100–1,000 words.

• Style: Punchy, concise stories with emotional resonance.

• Limit: Up to 3 pieces per submission cycle.

5. Artwork

• Formats: JPEG or PNG, 300 dpi minimum.

• Size: At least 1500px on the shortest side.

• Theme: Visual pieces should capture the issue’s theme in a positive, thought-provoking way.

• Limit: Up to 5 images per submission cycle.

• Note: Include an artist statement (50–150 words) in the body of your email.

6. Translations

• Length: Same as original category (poetry, prose, etc.).

• Requirements: You must have permission from the copyright holder to translate.

• Formatting: Include original text and translation in one file, with translation first.

Call for Submissions on Theme of: "the in-between": Bog Matter

 

Bog Matter is a speculative literary magazine published biannually in the spring and fall. It seeks to publish new short fiction, poetry, and graphic shorts that could be described as science fiction, horror, fantasy, magical realism, slipstream, New Weird, utopian, dystopian, satirical, cross-genre, experimental, or exuding a general air of oddness.

Submissions are currently open for our Fall 2025 issue, now until September 1. The optional theme is “the in-between”. Click the link above to submit. Please be sure to read the submission guidelines thoroughly before submitting.

General Info:

Any form of writing is acceptable (prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, essay, alternative forms, etc.) along with graphic short stories/comics.

Maximum 3500 words (submissions under 2000 words are preferred and will have a higher likelihood of acceptance).

Submitted pieces should be formatted to roughly follow Standard Manuscript Format and uploaded as a DOC or DOCX file. Graphic short stories should be submitted as a multi-page PDF file.

Pieces should be self-contained and complete, meaning works in progress or excerpts from larger works will not be considered.

Please note that any use of AI involved in the creation of a submission will result in its automatic rejection.

Fiction Short Stories, Essays, & Alternative Forms
are paid at $0.02/word, with a minimum payment of $5, plus two copies of the print issue. We are looking for works that are intended for print, meaning no screenplays, please! Unless the format is intentional/experimental and ultimately intended to be read on a page. Submitted short stories, essays, and alternative forms cannot have been previously published.

Poems
are paid at $0.02/word, with a minimum payment of $5 (if your combined accepted poems do not reach 250 total words), plus two copies of the print issue. You are welcome to submit up to ten poems as long as they collectively do not exceed 2000 words. Please format them together into one single document. Multiple accepted poems from one author may be split up and/or reordered when placed in the final print magazine. Submitted poems cannot have been previously published.

Graphic Short Stories/Comics
are paid at $4/page (as laid out in Bog Matter), plus two copies of the print issue. They should be able to take up a minimum of 2 laid-out pages and a maximum of 20, but we are more likely to accept pieces that would occupy 4-12 pages. Submitted graphic shorts can have been previously published. Please note that all images will be printed in Risograph and may not look exactly the same as they do in the original digital file once printed. When submitting, please upload a PDF of your piece as is (whether that’s full-color, spot-color, grayscale, or black and white) and we will discuss printing and color options after acceptance. We do all prepress and color-processing in-house and do not require you to do any additional color separations or image editing (unless requested for content/layout).

We do not accept multiple submissions, meaning you can only submit once for each issue. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please notify us promptly if your submitted piece gets accepted elsewhere. Please only withdraw your submission (via email) if it is accepted elsewhere, or you feel it truly isn’t up to your standards for publication. If you’ve edited your piece since submitting, we will consider your new edits after acceptance. Please do not withdraw a submission to submit a further edited version of the same piece.

Expect to hear our decision on your submission 2-6 weeks after the submission period closes.
